[heading class=”” style=”1″]Life at Hørhus[/heading]
Hørhus Kollegiet finished construction in 1972 as a result of an architecture contest. There are 192 rooms and eight floors. The main entrance is below street level in the basement, which also contains most of the dorm’s common facilities. The dorm is like any other dorm; residents can cook in the kitchen or study in the common area (AKA the “Triangle”). The floors usually arrange weekly meals that are prepared and consumed together. On Saturdays, many choose to spend the night in the dorm’s bar in the basement for a drink, a game of pool or foosball, general socialization, or the atmosphere at the dance floor (especially at the larger parties).

The Rooms
The rooms are 12 square meters, each with their private bathroom w/shower, hallway with wardrobe, and a balcony with screens against wind and rain.
Examples of furnished rooms are found here.

Each floor has two large kitchen, with 8 hot plates, 1 microwave, 1 oven, 4 refrigerators and 2 freezers per kithen. Residents with rooms facing the garden use the kitchen facing the street, and vice versa. Hence, there are 12 people to each kitchen.
Each resident has one cupboard, one refrigerator shelf, and one freezer drawer per person. The remainder of the storage is either shared, or used for the common items of each floor (spices, cooking oil, soap, etc.)

Residents’ Council
As an autonomous institution, the Hørhus dormitory is to a great extent run by the residents themselves. The Council meets once a month, and has subsidiary committees to manage the social events (Committee of the Parties, Committee of the Bar, Committee of the Games), as well as the dorm’s common facilities (Committee of the Garden, Committee of Information, Committee of Media, Committee of Fitness, Committee of the Antennas) and the administratative Committees (Committee of Complaints, Committee of Subleases, Committee of the Keys).
All residents can run for the Council, as well as submit suggestions to the Council’s work. The Council manages the money paid monthly alongside the rent, to improve the daily lives of the residents. This includes replacing the common facilities, arranging parties, and responds to requests made by residents for new things. Residents are free to create Committees and working groups to improve any shortcomings found within the dormitory.
The engagement of the residents is the reason for the existence of for example the music- and fitness room.

Kollegium: From Latin “collegium”. An Assembly of equally empowered members.
Hørhus Kollegiet is an autonomous institution, meaning that the residents in principle decide over their own residence. There are, of course a plethora of rules and laws that must be upheld and followed in such an institution, as the institution receives a large portion of support from the government. Decisions can in short be summarized as follows:
The Parliament and Ministeries create general guidelines for the institution’s operation. At the institution, a Board of 6 members, including 2 elected from and by the residents, that oversee that everything run its course appropriately – in an economical sense, but also ensuring that the residents’ rights not be violated. The Board has responsibility to the Municipal Board to uphold the law. The General Assembly of the Residents is held twice a year, where residents can decide upon close to everything they should wish. The Board is then responsible to ensure that decisions by the Assembly does not violate rights of other residents, and that the decisions reached be economically viable.
